In John Tucker Must Die, you get a story about the stereotypical new girl at high school. Played by Brittany Snow, Kate ends up catching John Tucker (played by Jesse Metcalfe) dating three other girls. Together with Heather, Carrie and Beth, they form a team bent on teaching John Tucker a lesson. Like most plans, this one starts to go terribly wrong and the end is a surprise. Produced in 2004, Mean Girls is satire at its finest. It shows the typical high school experience and the struggle to become popular. In the movie, Cady Heron (Lindsay Lohan) moves from Africa to the United States where she has her first experience with American high schools. Before long, she makes friends with two fellow outsiders. They decide to take down the Plastics, a group of cruel, pretty girls who dominate the school. As Cady becomes more popular, her original values start to change. Ultimately, she must decide if she will be true to her real friends or remain a part of the Plastics.
Pitch Perfect
Pitch Perfect is slightly different from the other movies on this list because it actually takes place at a college. This film follows an all-girls singing group known as the Barden Bellas. They catch the eye of everyone around them for their great singing and amazing looks. When they end up performing poorly at finals, they end up having to bring in some new recruits. One recruit is the freshman student, Beca. She ends up falling for Jesse who is a rival from another a cappella group. As the movie progresses, the girls must take back their sound and get a new look if they want to win their competition.
Easy A
If you have ever read the Scarlet Letter in an English class, you have a fairly good understanding of Easy A. In this film, Emma Stone plays the main character. Unable to date and tired of her good girl reputation, she deliberately spreads a rumor that she has been sleeping around. This 2010 film managed to be sweet, funny and intelligent at once. Although it might be listed as just another teenage movie, it deserves a place in the hall of fame.
Legally Blonde
Legally Blonde may have been made over a decade ago, but it remains one of the best chick flicks of all time. It stars Reese Witherspoon as Elle Woods. In the film, Woods is the president of her sorority and fits the stereotype of the pretty blonde. At the beginning of the film, she is dating the handsome fraternity boy, Warner Huntington III. She wants to marry hum, but he breaks up with her because is not an ideal political wife for his future career goals. Devastated, she applies to Harvard Law and follows him across the country. As she gets involved in law school, Elle learns more about who she is and what she wants in life.
Clueless
Clueless is another one of those films that remains a favorite decades later. Set in Beverly Hills, this classic story shows the tale of a girl named Cher. Known for caring about overly superficial things, Cher is more set on maintaining a strong social life than worrying about serious issues. Despite Cher’s superficial interests, Clueless manages to be a surprisingly engaging and interesting film.
A Walk to Remember
Produced in 2002, A Walk to Remember is set within the town of Beaufort, North Carolina. A group of high school students end up playing a prank that lands a fellow student in the hospital. As a result, the popular Landon Carter is blamed and punished. His punishment is to play the lead in the school play along with Jamie Sullivan. Before long, Jamie’s goal-driven nature encourages Landon to start taking things seriously as well. She begins to help him, and the couple quickly begins to develop feelings for each other. A surprising secret ends up coming between them, and the audience is carried along as the couple tries to figure out what to do.
American Pie
For a humorous take on American high schools, look no farther than American Pie. Produced in 1999, American Pie remains a classic of high school movies. It basically follows the plot line of a group of guys who make a pact to lose their virginity on prom night. Only one of the guys happens to have a girlfriend and his girlfriend is uncertain about taking it to the next step. This movie is fun and enjoyable to watch, but you should be warned that there are definitely some adult scenes and bathroom humor in it. If you do not mind a little risque humor, then this movie is a great choice to watch.
10 Things I Hate About You
Originally released in 1999, 10 Things I Hate About You is a clever take on the classic Shakespearean play, the Taming of the Shrew. In this movie, the story starts out at Padua High School. The new student, Cameron, is in the counselor’s office before he is taken around the school by his friend, Michael. Like most high school movies, Cameron quickly falls for a beautiful girl that he is unable to date. Bianca is the pretty girl and, in a strange twist, she is suddenly allowed to date if her sister Katarina is allowed to as well. With the help of popular boy, Joey Donner, Michael is able to get Patrick to consider dating Katarina.
She’s the Man
The film may be a little corny at times, but it is still super fun to watch. In She’s the Man, we get to watch the adorable Amanda Byrnes play the role of Viola. Unfortunately for soccer-loving Viola, her school gets rid of the girls’ soccer team. Since she wants to play, she decides to disguise herself as a boy and says that she is her twin brother. Before long, the mixed gender role play starts to get confusing for Viola who is dressed as a boy and talking to her crush. With Viola’s actual twin returning home anytime, the movie gets even more hilarious. If you have the time, this movie is worth watching.
