10 Tips for Dating an Older Man
Sometime you may be interested in an older man. Sometimes he returns the attention. If you do begin dating someone who is a good bit older than you- like 10+ years older, there are some important things to keep in mind. These will help you through the ups and downs and the little quirks that come with dating a guy who is much older than you.
1. Make it an opportunity to learn new things
Dating someone who has been alive longer than you can be a great opportunity to learn new things. They have been there and done that and have seen more of the world than you have. Chances are they are wiser and smarter than you in some things so learn from them and do not belittle their knowledge or their experience.
2. Focus on the things you have in common
There will be many things you have in common with your older guy- that is why you two are dating. Focus on those things. Do not let age get in the way and become a distraction. You will be different in some ways but those differences can be good, so long as they do not take away from the things you have in common.
3. Money doesn’t make someone better or worse
Your older guy may have money and he may not. His financial status does not necessarily make him a better person. This is all to say that money should not be the reason you are dating him and a lack of money is no reason not to date someone. As long as you make each other happy and have common interests you should give it a chance and see where it goes. Money should not be a factor.
4. It is likely he is set in his ways
He has lived longer than you have so he is likely to be more set in his ways and less likely to change. He has been this way for 30, 40, or more years, so it will not be easy for you to change him. Accept him as he is, quirks and odd habits, and you can have a chance at having a great relationship together.
5. Let his kids get close to you
When kids are involved it can always be a little awkward. This is especially true when there is a big age difference between the two of you because his kids are likely to be closer to your age. Let them get to know you and be a part of their lives, but do not interfere with how he raises them.
6. The type of intimacy will be different
Older people express themselves differently than younger people and this true even when it comes to intimacy. If he has been in past relationships before, he may still carry hurts and scars from those women and it may impact how he displays affection towards you. Accept that and work to find a common way you both can express your love to and for each other.
7. Never point out how old he is
It can be tempting, in the heat of an argument, to point out his age. It can be tempting at times to use his age as an excuse. Never ever do this! Calling him out because of his age or acting in a way that makes him feel bad because he is older will poison your relationship.
8. Act your age
Just because you are with someone older doesn’t mean you have to act older too. Be yourself and do the things you like to you. Your man will understand and appreciate that. He may even enjoy doing those things with you because it will give him a chance to act young again and have fun and forget how old he is.
9. Don’t let others interfere in your relationship
People have their own opinions when it comes to dating and relationship and who should and should not date who. Some people are fine with big age differences other have a big problem with it. Do not let family and friends try to tell you how to date and interfere with your relationship. It is between you and your man.
10. Don’t think about the very distant future
When you are dating an older man the temptation often becomes one of thinking about the future. Depending on your ages, your man may be up there in years. It can be tempting to think about 5 or 10 years down the road and whether or not he will still be around. Try not to think on that and focus on the here and now and the good times you two can share. Keep the focus on the year ahead and the things you two can do together.
