11 Awesome 20th Birthday Ideas
Twentieth birthdays are seriously such a tease. You’re not quite old enough to drink, but you aren’t a teenager anymore. So what exactly are you supposed to do for this incredibly awkward birthday year? Here’s some awesome ideas to celebrate leaving your teen years behind and saying “Hello!” to the amazing adult years ahead of you.
1. Go Downtown (18 and Over Spots)
So you’re not allowed to indulge in an alcoholic beverage just yet, but there’s still plenty of nightlife entertainment for people over the age of 18. Sure it might be a little discouraging to not have the 21+ wrist band wrapped around your wrist, but you can still have a blast dancing it up with your besties on the dance floor. If you’re into the downtown city scene, we suggest hitting the downtown hot spots for some fun on your 20th birthday!
2. Throw a Party
Okay, so maybe the nightlife isn’t your scene but you still love a good party. Well, my party people, here’s one for you: throw your own party! Invite some friends over, throw on some music, get some food and drinks, and of course some birthday cake. If you have a pool or spa this is an extra awesome idea: hello, did someone say cool birthday pool party blow out? Who doesn’t love the sound of that?! Keep it small with your closest friends or have an extravaganza in the comfort of your own home- it’s up to you!
3. Go on a Road Trip
Love to see new places and check out new things? There’s no better time to get out of the house and do a little bit of exploring than on your birthday. Travel to your favorite location (like a special lake or really huge mall), or just hit the open road for a few hours and do a little bit of exploring in a place you’ve never been before. You never know what you might run into!
4. Hit the Beach
Whether you’re 2, 10, or 20, there’s NO cooler place than the beach, right? You get to sport that sexy bikini, lather on plenty of oil and get a groovy tan, and enjoy sparkling water that is as pretty to look at as it is fun to get your feet in. Oh- and as an added bonus, it’s one hundred percent FREE. Good times with little to no cost: awesome birthday party idea, right? If there’s no beaches nearby, lakes and rivers do the trick too.
5. Dinner: Always a Winner
Whether you make dinner the main event of your birthday or simply the starter, it’s certainly an important piece of the birthday party puzzle. It’s a must! Go out to your favorite dinner and get the most expensive dish on the menu, or hit up that nifty ’50s diner with the cute milkshakes for you and your friends to split. It’s up to you- I mean, it’s your birthday, after all! Make it a big occasion with your fanciest apparel or keep it casual.
6. Movie Anyone?
Seriously- who doesn’t love the movies? It’s quick, easy, and requires absolutely no setup on your part. All you have to do is choose the movie and pay! So if you noticed there’s a really awesome thriller coming out with the actor you’re in love with as the main character or there’s something hilarious you’ve been dying to see, why not make your birthday party plans a breeze and head to the movies with your favorite pals. Grab dinner before or after to make the night complete!
7. Amusement Park!
You can’t go wrong with amusement parks. Everyone loves amusement parks. There’s always something for everyone: a smooth, simple, and cute ride for the scaredy cats of the group, and crazy coasters for the thrill seekers. Not to mention tons of awesome games, delicious treats, and amazing food places to indulge in all your favorites! This option is a little bit more costly, but it’s definitely a fun thing to do that will last all day long.
8. Mini Vacation
We mentioned earlier about road trips. But if just a few hours away from home isn’t good enough and you don’t have school or work the next morning, why not go all out and go on a miniature vacation? It doesn’t matter whether you decide on heading to the beach for the weekend or taking an airplane to another country for an amazing excavation full of thrills, excitement, and history. If you’ve got the funds and that’s where you want to be on your birthday, you might as well do it. After all, next year you’ll probably be too thrashed to enjoy a little vacation like this one, right? 😉
9. Shopping Spree
Okay, seriously. I don’t care WHAT birthday you’re celebrating. What girls wouldn’t want to go on some crazy amazing shopping spree for hours on end on her birthday, spending all of her birthday cash on that sexy leather jacket from Guess or a couple of flirty miniskirts from the hip downtown boutique? If you can’t think of anything else to do for your 20th, we highly recommend gathering up the birthday money from your grandparents at brunch and taking the rest of the day shopping til you drop.
10. Relive Your Past
Like we said before, on your 20th birthday you’re saying goodbye to your teen years and saying hello to your adult years. What better time to relive your past? Have a flashback birthday party that makes you feel like a kid again. Invite some of your best gal pals over for a slumber party and bust out some of your old favorites: that adorable sparkly pink nail polish, your Easy Bake oven, your favorite movie (Little Mermaid? Beauty and the Beast?), maybe even a few of your Barbie dolls- just for laughs. There’s so many possibilities and you’re sure to have an AWESOME time! I bet your friends won’t mind feeling like a little girl again either- just for one night, of course!
11. Do Something CRAZY
Remember: this is your VERY LAST DAY as a teenager. You will NEVER experience your teen years again. For some, it’s reason to celebrate. For others, it’s no big deal. And for some, it’s reason to do something totally wild and crazy! Sound like you? Then why not do something you have never done before. Maybe go bungee jumping or skydiving. Maybe try sushi or some exotic dish you’ve never heard before. Maybe you could jump into the ocean from a pier way high up or go hiking up the tallest mountain around. There’s TONS of options- let this year be the year you conquer something totally awesome!
Who said turning 20 had to be boring after all? There’s plenty of things you can do! Head downtown for some (non-alcoholic) drinks and dancing, throw a party of your own, or simply go on a fun shopping spree out of town. Do something CRAZY or keep it casual with dinner and a movie. Just don’t forget to celebrate and get a really BIG cake to celebrate the last day of being a teenager!
