25 Most Iconic Movie Couples
Over the last few years, we’ve seen the birth of many great couples in the movie world. Just recently the formidable duo of Eddie Redmayne and Felicity Jones as Sir Stephen Hawking and Jane Wilde in The Theory of Everything. Did you hear how well that movie did at the recent award ceremonies? Eddie Redmayne even cut short his honeymoon to grab that Golden Globe for Best Actor!
Of course, there a few movie couples you can’t forget about. You should take a look at the 25 most iconic movie couples:
1 – John & Jane Smith, Mr. & Mrs. Smith
Come on – you can’t talk about the most iconic movie couples without talking about that famous movie from back in 2005 that reportedly destroyed the marriage of Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston, and saw the birth of a super-couple in the form of Brangelina – Brad and Angelina Jolie.
Mr. & Mrs. Smith was the classic love story… or not! They are married, they are assassins, neither of them know that about each other, what could possibly go wrong? Well, aside from the fact they need to kill each other…
It reinvented their marriage in the movie and it saw the birth of one of the most influential and iconic movie couples ever created. Six kids later (three of their own and three adopted), they ar enow married and living the happy ever after Hollywood dream!
It gives us all hope, doesn’t it?
2 – Allie & Noah, The Notebook
There probably isn’t a girl alive that hasn’t seen this classic tear-jerker romance which combines just the right amount of pure romance, giggles and tears to be classed as one of the must-see films of our generation.
The 2004 film saw Ryan Gosling (swoon) and Rachel McAdams coming together to make some of the most memorable movie quotes of our time, and has given females everywhere a completely unrealistic view of what romance really should look like! (Sigh!)
One thing is for sure though, Noah Calhoun and Allie Hamilton sure are a match made in heaven, right? Even if it is in movie-make-believe!
3 – Rose & Jack, Titanic
Another of the classic and massive hits of our time and we come to the 1997 movie that broke records all over the world, Titanic. Compelling, moving and over three hours long, it saw the creation of the love story between Jack Dawson and Rose DeWitt Bukater, played by Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet.
It was nominated for fourteen Academy Awards and then went on to win eleven of them, and then won four Golden Globes, and was also nominated for ten BAFTA Awards! Critical acclaim aside, it was a film that captured the hearts of women all over the world and continues to do so.
Near, far, wherever you are….
4 – Baby & Johnny, Dirty Dancing
This is THE ultimate and iconic of all movie couples, right? Baby – Frances Houseman, and Johnny Castle come together in the most beautiful love story of all time. Dancing, great music, a hot man wearing no shirt, passionate love scenes – what more could you ask for?
The 1987 movie has since been reborn with digital remastered versions being released, and even a Broadway show, and the entire world was in shock when Patrick Swayze sadly died from pancreatic cancer on September 14th, 2009 at the age of 57 years old.
5 – Kat & Patrick, 10 Things I Hate About You
Come on – we’ve all seen this hilarious movie. It’s basically a prime example of everything wrong with high school love affairs and at the same time, it had us rip-roaring with laughter, empathising with fights with our Dads when we were trying to be rebellious during our younger years.
Although coming together for a ‘paid job’, Kat Stratford and Patrick Verona fall in love in the modern-day adaption of the Shakespeare play The Taming of the Shrew and the 1999 hit soon made both Julia Stiles and the sadly decreased Heath Ledger household names.
6 – Bella & Edward, Twilight
It was a film that divided the nation. You were either Team Edward or Team Jacob and although many of us were on the werewolves side, the romance between Bella and Edward blew us away.
Five movies later and the scenes that we were left with at the end of the movies (adapted from books by Stephanie Meyer) will be remembered for the rest of our lives. We went to the cinema to see it and there wasn’t a dry eye in the house! There were even guys crying at that final scene. If you’ve not seen it, you should give it a watch.
Both the books and the movies are critically acclaimed and although Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson are no longer together in real life, their romance throughout the series of films that started in 2008 changed the course of movie history.
7 – Carrie & Big, Sex and the City
The HBO TV shows were a bit hit and the movies were just as fabulous. The Sex and the City movie saw the romance between Carrie and Big, played by Sarah Jessica Parker and Chris Noth almost fall apart when he stood her up at the altar but just as with many classic love stories, the two were meant to be together and love will always find a way.
It gives the rest of the female population home that one day, they too might find their Mr. Big. I’m still looking for mine… Have you found yours?
8 – Sandy & Danny, Grease
“Those summer nights….”
We loved the soundtrack to this musical film almost as much as we loved the movie itself but one thing is clear – this is one of those films that literally changed the world. Sandy Olsson and Danny Zuko were played by Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta, and these roles well and truly put them on the Hollywood hall of fame and the soundtrack reached epic sales records even becoming the second-best selling album of the year in the US, but that was only beaten by another John Travolta film – Saturday Night Fever!
9 – Elizabeth & Will, Pirates of the Caribbean
Who could forget the story of Elizabeth Swann and Will Turner in the hit string of films that starred Keira Knightley and Orlando Bloom alongside Johnny Depp. A conventional love story it definitely wasn’t but that doesn’t mean it didn’t capture the hearts of millions!
10 – Christian & Satine, Moulin Rouge!
Who can forget about the forbidden love between Christian and Satine in the 2001 musical hit Moulin Rouge!? Produced, co-written and directed by film genius Baz Luhrmann (also responsible for the Leonardo DiCaprio and Claire Danes movie Romeo & Juliet), most of us fell in love with Ewan McGregor’s character, Christine, during that great song “Come What May”. We can’t forget about Nicole Kidman’s amazing performance either. They definitely made quite the iconic movie couple!
11 – Charlie & Maverick, Top Gun
This 1986 great is one of the films that everyone considers to be a must-see these days and just one of the reasons was the beautiful love story between Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell, played by Hollywood great Tom Cruise, and Charlotte ‘Charlie’ Blackwood, played by Kelly McGillis. We can all pretty much reenact the scene with that great song “You’ve Lost That Loving Feeling” word for word, can’t we?
12 – Cinderella & Prince Charming
We know it’s cliche but the ultimate Hollywood couple surely has to be Cinderella & her Prince Charming, surely? Release in 1950 by the great fairy-tale kind Walt Disney, it’s a story that has captured the heart of million of little girls the word over, and let’s be honest about this – most of us grown up’s still lust after the happy-ever-after fairy-tale ending, don’t we?
Just so you know, the voices of Cinderella and Prince Charming in that film were played by Ilene Woods and William Phipps. Now where did we put our glass slippers?
13 – Jenny & Forrest, Forrest Gump
Right, it’s a classic. If you’ve not seen Forrest Gump, you must – immediately, if not sooner! The 1994 epic hit starring Tom Hanks as Forrest Gump and Robin Wright as Jenny Curran has created some of the best movie quotes of all time. Surely you’ve all heard of the “Life is like a box of chocolates” line…? Their love story truly was beautiful and although sad with the implied death from HIV/AIDS in the hit, definitely struck quite the chord for movie-watchers and critics alike.
14 – Bridget & Mark, Bridget Jones’s Diary
First it was Daniel Cleaver, then it was Mark Darcy, then it was Daniel Cleaver and then it was right back to Mark Darcy again. Bridget Jones, played by Renee Zellweger in the hit 2001 movie couldn’t make up her mind and to be honest, we don’t blame her in the slightest!
The adorable yet rogue Daniel Cleaver was played by our favourite British, posh-speaking bad boy Hugh Grant, and the smart and eloquent Mark Darcy was played by Colin Firth, a great British actor responsible for a string of other amazing films such as The Kings Speech.
We are glad that Bridget Jones opted for Mark Darcy – they made such a funny and iconic couple and millions of women all over the world totally empathised with her struggles in love and life!
15 – Charlie & Sam, The Perks of Being a Wallflower
The coming-of-age 2012 hit saw Emma Watson playing the part of Sam, and Logan Lerman playing the part of Charlie. We won’t say too much about the plot in case you haven’t managed to get around to seeing the movie yet but when you see it, you’ll fall in love with this movie couple just as much as we did!
16 – Vivien & Edward, Pretty Woman
Richard Gere and Julia Roberts come together in this amazing 1990 hit movie following a wealthy and lonely businessman and his journey with a hooker that was slightly out of her league. The story goes pretty much exactly the way you thought it would but despite it’s predictability, the relationship between Edward and Vivien sure makes it a great watch!
If you’ve not seen it yet, perhaps it’s time that you did?
17 – Sam & Austin, A Cinderella Story
Find me one girl that doesn’t want the “Cinderella” happy ending to a love story and I’ll eat my own hat. Deep down all girls are just looking for their Prince Charming and in this 2004 American teen movie, Hillary Duff (playing Sam) and the adorable Chad Michael Murray (playing Austin) show that “Once upon a time… Can happen anytime!”
18 – Mary Jane & Peter, Spider-Man
We all remember that upside-down kiss in the 2002 film Spider-Man, don’t we? Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson played by Tobey Maguire and Maggie Gyllenhaal came together in an explosive and somewhat secretive love affair that keep all us hanging on the edge of our seats.
19 – Joel & Clementine, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind
Have you ever wished that you could just erase an ex and forget they ever existed? That’s exactly what this film depicts in the somewhat weird and wonderful relationship between Clementine Kruczynski (Kate Winslet) and Joel Barish (Jim Carrey) and despite being completely different people, they are drawn together in a way neither of them can explain. There’s a very strange twist to this movie… You’ll need to watch it to find out more. The 2004 hit is a definite one to watch if you’re going through a breakup.
20 – Viola & William, Shakespeare in Love
I was personally obsessed with this movie when I was younger and apart from that one kinda-raunchy scene, the whole film is as romantic as you dreamt it would be. Sword fights, word play, emotion, romance, passion – it has all the components of a fantastic love movie, and with the chemistry between Viola (played with Gwyneth Paltrow) and William Shakespeare himself (played by Joseph Fiennes), you couldn’t as for much more. Their secret romance in the 1998 adaptation of Rome & Juliet is enough to reestablish anyone’s belief in true love.
21 – Harry & Sally, When Harry Met Sally
Come on – we all know this movie for one scene and one scene only. Despite being one of the greatest films to come out of 1989, the most memorable moment in that film was when Sally (played by Meg Ryan) faked a very loud orgasm in a crowded cafe to prove a point to Harry (played by Billy Crystal). If you’ve never seen it, you definitely should. The bond between the main two actors in that movie was hilarious!
22 – Anna & Will, Notting Hill
She was a famous movie actress and he was a nobody that owned a funky London-based book store. Their romance was doomed from the start but we all learn that the hard way, especially in this utterly hilarious romantic comedy starring Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant.
Release in 1999, it ended up being the highest grossing film of the year and even won a bunch of awards including a BAFTA, a British Comedy Award, and even a Brit Award for the album soundtrack. Impressive, right?
23 – Pat & Tiffany, Silver Lining’s Playbook
Again, we don’t want to give away too much information about this hit movie that was only released a couple of years ago in 2012. Starring Bradley Cooper as Pat, and the amazing Jennifer Lawrence as Tiffany, it’s a film many can relate to covering topics such real life, love, mental illness and more. Please watch it if you haven’t – it’ll completely change your outlook on love!
24 – Molly & Sam, Ghost
Right, if you’ve not seen the hit 1990 movie Ghost, you don’t know what you’re missing. OK so it’s a tad farfetched, the ghost of your ex-boyfriend coming back to haunt you and protect you against a bank-robbing maniac but hey, it sure shows you what love could be with the right guy.
It was that pottery scene that sold it for most girls but the whole movie, from start to finish, will bring you to tears with poor Molly (played by Demi Moore) has a difficult coming to terms with the death of her loved one, Sam (played by Patrick Swayze).
Plus you get to see a really HOT Patrick Swayze with his top off. Enough said.
25 – Scarlett & Rhett, Gone With the Wind
It’s an oldie but a goodie and a must-watch for any woman that likes to call herself a lady. Released in 1939, it went through a whole world of problems before it finally made it to the big screen, even as far as being delayed for two years! Vivien Leigh and Clark Gable, who play the lead two characters in the role, portray a very old-fashioned romance that get’s us all swooning every time.
We wanted to put so many different iconic movie couples into this list and had a hard time narrowing it down to just these 25. We feel that these are the ones that have changed the way most girls perceive romance – they either touch us or we empathise with them in one form or another and isn’t that what a good actor and actress should achieve in the average romantic film?
