Cartoons have the potential to become cult classics when they’re done the right way, much like many on our list of top 10 most popular cartoons 2017. With light and dark humor, and even some stuff we don’t always understand, there’s a little something for everyone, covering all types and senses of humor you could think of. If you were looking for something to watch tonight, may we suggest a few of these …

1 – Star vs. the Forces of Evil

A TV show that first aired a couple of years ago in 2015, Star vs. the Forces of Evil has proven to be a big hit around the world, offered to the viewing public by the Disney Channel. In just February of this year (2017), it was given the go-ahead, all contracts renewer for a fourth season. It’s proving to be a very popular cartoon choice, featuring the voices of Eden Sher, known for her role in The Middle for ABC, and Alan Tudyk, who some of you may remember from movies such as Frozen (he was the voice of the Duke of Weselton) and Wreck-It Ralph, in which he was the voice of King Candy.

4 – Arthur

Have you ever noticed that Arthur wears his glasses all wrong? We saw a meme showing this once on the internet and now we can’t un-see it. Not that it ruins the popular cartoon, of course, and one of the contenders in the top 10 most popular cartoons 2017. Just in case you ever wondered what kind of animal Arthur was (because you know he’s not human with ears like that), he’s an anthropomorphic aardvark. We had to Google that too!

This show first premiered in 2013, and has since grown quite the cult following. With it’s weird sci-fi style plots and dark, often close-to-the-line humor, and some of the gags, such as Rick’s habit of burping, actually came about as a result of behind-the-scenes, real-live belches. The original and creative work aired it’s third series, entirely unannounced, back in April of this year (2017).

10 – The Simpsons

The Simpsons will be a popular cartoon forever, not just for 2017. In 1989, the show first aired, although we’re sure nobody back then knew what a massive hit it would go on to become. Now recognised as one of the most popular TV shows ever around the world, it was recently re-signed to continue into 2018 and 2019, making it not only the longest running American sitcom, but also the longest-running American animated TV show, and also the longest primetime scripted TV show from American too. After a break up, you don’t want to do anything. You want to relax at home and forget about all of your troubles. It takes time to get over a long relationship, so give yourself space, grab some tissue and pull up your favorite ice cream. While you are recovering, these are some of the best movies to watch after a breakup. You won’t feel as good as new after them, but you will feel a bit better to realize that just about everyone has gone through the same emotional trauma.

1. Silver Linings Playbook

We absolutely love this movie. It stars the lovely Jennifer Lawrence and Bradley Cooper. In the film, Cooper is unable to get over his divorce. He has moved back into his parents house as he grapples with his mental demons. Meanwhile, Lawrence’s character has some demons of her own because of the death of her husband. Will these two misfits be able to come together and find the silver lining in life?

2. Under the Tuscan Sun

Basically, this movie is premised on a woman running away to Italy just to get away from the thoughts and physical presence of her ex. Once there, she ends up buying a villa and making a new home for herself. You will empathize with the break up aspect of the film, and the ending will leave you hopeful that life really will work out. This is a wonderful movie if you want to cry your eyes out as you try to understand how even a marriage can end in disaster. This is certainly one of the best movies to watch after a breakup.

3. Amelie

At first glance, this movie does not seem like it should be on the list. After all, this French film does not even include a romance in it, right? Wrong. We think that this would still be a wonderful movie to watch after a breakup. Basically, the girl, Amelie, is completely alone in her life. She watches the people around her and tries to make the world a little better. If you don’t understand the difference between being alone and actually being lonely, this movie will show you what it means.

4. Legally Blonde

This is certainly one of the top breakup movies of all time. Elle is a sorority girl and has a boyfriend who is about to go to Harvard Law School. Suddenly, the boyfriend dumps her because he wants to have a wife who is more Jackie Kennedy-like than Elle is. Enraged, she decides to follow him to Harvard Law School. She amazingly gets in to the school, but is instantly bogged down by the work. She struggles through the years in law school to outshine everyone and discover that she does not need him after all. She was a better, smarter person than he ever was!

5. (500) Days of Summer

This is a great movie to watch at any time. If you are going through a break up, it will really help you out. You will easily empathize with Summer or Tom if you were convinced that you and your ex will meant to be. The movie is a good reminder that you can get through the rough times in life if you want to. It just takes time to heal and move on, but it will happen. It might seem difficult at first, but it will start to get easier.

6. High Fidelity

Out of all John Cusack’s movies about love and breakups, this is probably our favorite. In the film, Rob Gordon has already gone through many, many breakups. He wants to know why none of his relationships ever seem to work out. Watching this movie is a great way to get perspective on your own life. At the very least, you will get a few moments to be with a character who really understands the pain that you are going through.

7. Wuthering Heights

This is a movie that is based on a classic novel. In Wuthering Heights, you run into two characters who are just as miserable as you are. If you love books or movies like Pride & Prejudice, this is a good option to go with.

8. Diary of a Mad Black Woman

This romantic comedy stars Tyler Perry. It starts with a couple who have a seemingly happy marriage. Unknown to the wife, the husband is contemplating divorce. While this is certainly a comedy at times, it also has a darker, grittier side to it. Whatever the case, it certainly imbues you with a sense of strength and fortitude as you are going through your own breakup.

9. Notting Hill

After a bad breakup, it is easy to convince yourself that it is impossible to find true love. No matter what you do, nothing will ever work out. This entire movie is about a movie star and her life as a celebrity. Her high-profile suddenly changes when she ends up falling in love with a simple bookstore owner in Notting Hill. It stars two of our favorite romance stars, Julia Roberts and Hugh Grant. The story is beautiful to watch, and it will make you forget about your own break up for a little while.

10. First Wives Club

Sometimes, you want to watch a romance where the characters have an ugly break up that tears them apart. It makes you feel better about your own life, and it gives you a vicarious sense of revenge. If you want a film about ex-wives getting their own revenge, then check out the First Wives Club. Basically, the plot line focuses on women who were the first wives of their ex-husbands. Before long, their husbands trade them in for younger, prettier models. Rather than sit back and wait for an alimony check, they decide to join together, take action and get the revenge that they so richly deserve.

11. All the Real Girls

If you fell in love with Zooey Deschanel in the hit show, New Girl, then you are going to love All the Real Girls. This romance film is all about breakups. It is one of the only independent films on this list, and it follows a classic story of a young man with a certain type of reputation. Set in a small town, this is a great movie to watch after a breakup.

12. The Holiday

This is an incredibly breakup movie to watch. It features two excellent actresses as well as a great plot line. The story essentially revolves around a house swap between Los Angeles and the United Kingdom. If you needed to distract yourself from constantly texting your ex, this movie might be interesting enough to do the trick.

13. Annie Hall

This might be one of the older movies on this list, but we think that it would still be a great choice. The ending is worth watching all on its own, but we don’t want to remove the entire plot line by revealing too much, too soon. Just watch it and find out for yourself!

14. Pride and Prejudice

If you are a Jane Austen fan, then this is the film to watch, This is a movie based on one of Jane Austen’s most famous novels, Pride and Prejudice. Set in rural England, it looks like a family wit ha bunch of daughters. Their mother is scurrying about with the goal of finding each of them a husband, but missteps and disasters keep happening along the way. We love the movie version with Keira Knightley playing Elizabeth Bennet. While the happy ending may hurt a bit when you are going through a break up, the movie will leave you hopeful for the future. Before long, you will want to find your own Darcy!

15. She-Devil

You gave everything to the relationship than he (or she) leaves you in the dust. It is time to get your revenge. In this movie, the husband leaves for a younger woman. Rather than wait around and grow old alone, she decides to get revenge for herself by ruining his life. If even a part of you wishes that you could get revenge, this will be a very gratifying film for you to watch.

16. Bridge Jones’ Diary

This is by far one of our favorite romantic comedies on this list. Released in 2001, this story follows the tale of 32-year-old Bridget. She has decided that her life needs to take a turn for the better. She starts keeping a diary and decides to lose the extra 10 to 20 pounds of weight. Plus, it is time to find the right guy to partner up with. Before long, she is torn between two guys: a roguish playboy and a upper-class gentleman. It is hard for her to choose which one is the right guy, which is one of the reasons that there are actually two sequels to this movie. If you want to sit down, veg out and watch Bridget’s struggles with romance, invest in all three.

17. Forgetting Sarah Marshall

Your breakup could be worse. You could have spent your relationship with a celebrity only to be dumped for someone richer, more famous and more attractive. Unfortunately, that is exactly what happens in Forgetting Sarah Marshall. Peter Bretter is a struggling musician. Most people only recognize him as the boyfriend of the television celebrity, Sarah Marshall (played by Kirsten Bell). She dumps him and moves on, but he feels alone and heartbroken. He decides to finally try to get over the breakup by going to Hawaii, but Sarah has unfortunately planned a vacation with her new boyfriend at the exact same hotel.

This is a good movie to watch after a breakup. It is especially good if your ex-partner cheated on you because Sarah certainly gets paid back for her sins at the end of the book. The main character is adorable and sympathetic, which makes this a funny, heart-touching film to watch.

18. The Break-Up

This movie stars Vince Vaughn and Jennifer Aniston, so you know that it is a great choice. Brooke is an arts dealer. Gary works s a tour-bus driver. After the relationship stops working for them, they decide to breakup. While they both agree that a breakup is necessary, neither of them wants to move out of the condo that they bought together. With the help of friends, they sneakily try to manipulate the other partner into leaving. Ultimately, they end up becoming unhappy, hostile roommates instead.

There are romances that make you cry and feel a great deal of sympathy. There are other romance films that leave you laughing and thankful that your life is so much simpler. This is the second type. You will laugh until you cry, and the film will give you an entirely new perspective on relationships in general.

19. Jerry Maguire

This is a classic breakup movie that is worth watching. It stars Jerry Maguire. He works as a sports agent, and he finally manages to find someone who believes in him. At least, he thought he did, but then he screwed everything up. This is a great movie to watch if you have ever been broken up with and want someone to sympathize with.

20. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

This might be a romance, but there is no way that you could expect everything that happens in this movie. Basically, this movie will make you question your own view of reality, and it has a tendency to make people leave feeling depressed. It does show the value in remembering things. No matter how much you want to forget your ex-partner, there are times when you have to remember. You just have to learn from your mistakes, come to terms with the past and gradually move on. As this movie shows, doing anything else can lead to dire consequences. If you are tired of rom-coms, then this is a good movie option to go with instead.

Paranormal movies are already a lot of fun to watch. These movies are even eerier because of their factual basis. Instead of just making up a story about a terrifying ghost or demon, these stories are based on true stories. Even if the ghostly apparition was not actually real, the people who experienced these strange happenings believed that they were. If you are ready to be scared out of your mind, check out these 15 paranormal movies based on true stories. We highly recommend that you watch them with a friend. If you are quite brave, you can try to watch these on a dark, moonless night.

1. From Hell

Jack the Ripper was, and is, one of the best known serial killers in history. Part of this is because no one ever really figured out who he was. Jack the Ripper was the appellation given to the man responsible for killing and mutilating women during 1880s London. Like many serial killers, he tended to focus on the easiest victims like prostitutes. Some people speculate that he may have been a doctor, and theories abound about who could possibly be Jack the Ripper. Today, we still do not know his real identity.

While his story may be long gone, people are still fascinated by it. Unsurprisingly, Hollywood decided to take their turn in telling this story. If you want to be terrified, this is a good paranormal movie based on a true story to see.

2. The Amityville Horror

This is one of the most famous true ghost stories to hit the silver screen. Decades ago, the DeFeo family lived in a house on the east coast. Before long, strange things started to happen. Some people think that angry spirits were rising up from the Native American burial ground beneath the house. Whatever the case, the DeFeo family was found murdered by one of the family members.

Later on, the Lutz family bought the house. Because of the tragic murders, they were able to get a great deal on it. The members of the family started to experience odd occurrences and unexplained, scary happenings. Once they realized how dangerous the paranormal forces were at the house, they fled the scene and never came back. They ended up writing a book about the scary happenings, which was eventually turned into a movie. There is an older and a more modern version of the film. While some parts of the movie are exaggerated, others are completely real.

3. The Mothman Prophecies

Surprise! This paranormal movie is actually based on a true story. From 1966 to 1967, a number of people in Point Pleasant, West Virginia reported seeing a large, moth-like creature. Some people said that they saw it flying around or hovering on the Silver Bridge in torn. Ultimately, that bridge actually collapsed during rush hour traffic and 46 people died. After the collapse of the bridge, the Mothman was never seen again.

4. Audrey Rose

This is one of the oldest films on the list. It is focused on a loving family. The daughter is believed to be possessed by a ghost who calls herself Audrey Rose. This story was based on a book written by Frank DeFelitta.

5. Shadow People

This story is all about an unexpected, unexplained phenomenon that started occurring in the 1970s. Researchers were looking at an event called Sudden Unexplained Nocturnal Death Syndrome. Basically, people were going to bed healthy, but never waking up. Researchers could not figure out why they were dying, so some people developed a theory that there were shadow people who killed other people as they slept.

6. The Exorcism of Emily Rose

In the 1970s, Anneliese Michel was a 17-year-old student who was thought to be possessed by a demon. This story is based on her real-life experiences. In the movie, it discusses a negligent homicide case about the death of Emily Rose. While the case moves along, the viewer gets filled in on the back story. We watch Emily Rose slip into madness and see tapes that were recorded when an exorcism was attempted.

All of the events in the film are modeled after what happened to Anneliese Michel in real life. Most people believe that Emily was just mentally ill. A combination of religious hysteria, abuse and negligence led to her demise. Either way, the movie based on her will have you terrified.

7. Hard Candy

This movie will give you a new take on how people operate. It is not traditionally scary, although it is a little unnerving. The movie is based on the real story of Japanese girls who would lure businessmen into secluded areas where they would beat, torture and robe them. One of the most horrifying things about the story is how normal and sweet the girls look. You would never believe that they could be capable of something so awful.

8. The Shining

The Shining may have been a Hollywood hit, but it was actually based on a real life place. The actual hotel was called the Stanley hotel and was located in Estes Park, Colorado. For years, people reported odd, paranormal activity in the hotel. Most of the strange events occurred in the ballroom. Workers at the hotel would hear dancing, conversations and loud music. When they went to investigate, there would be no one there and no reason for the odd noises.

People reported that the piano would play at odd hours. Some people even reported seeing ghostly apparitions. After Stephen King visited the hotel with his wife, he decided to write a book based on it.

9. An American Haunting

According to the marketers of this movie, this was the only case in American history of a man dying because of a spirit. It occurred in the 1800s, and the event was known as the Bell Witch Hauntings. Long ago, the Bell family lived in a small town within Tennessee. Suddenly, they began to hear knocking and scratching on the walls. Before long, the activity began to grow violent. The Bell’s youngest daughter would feel pinched or hit by an unexplained force, and actual bruises would develop. Other family members would feel their hair pulled and would get kicked.

Ultimately, John Bell became extremely sick and died next to a bottle of poison. To this day, there are many theories behind why this happened to the family, and An American Haunting chooses just one of them.

10. The Possession

In this film, the odd events are based around a dibbuk box. This box is said to be a Jewish wine cabinet that is haunted. It was auctioned on eBay for $280 and came with a list of hauntings. According to the buyer, the dibbuk led to scared employees and broken glass. Supposedly, it even caused his mother to have a stroke. The actual movie follows a different plot line and has a young girl become possessed by the box instead of the actual story.

11. The Texas Chain Saw Massacre

This story revolves around two siblings who hear that their grandfather’s grave was vandalized. They head out with friends to see what happened. When they reach the family’s old farmhouse, they run into a group of murderous hoodlums and outcasts. The group falls victim to these cannibals. Although much of the story is not actually true, it was marketed as a true story to attract more viewers. Some of the actual characters were inspired by real people though such as the actual murderer, Ed Gein.

12. Deranged

This is another film based on Ed Gein. He was a serial killer who was raised by an extremely religious mother. Because of her, he ended up having a hatred for women. He started by digging up women to use as decorations. After getting tired of that, he started killing women instead. This movie is beyond deranged, and it is not something that you should watch on a full stomach.

13. Dahmer

Jeffrey Dahmer was another real-life serial killer. He ended killing up to 20 men and dismembered him. He stored their body parts in his freezer before engaging in necrophilia and cannibalism. The scary part was that he was ruled sane after he was caught. Ultimately, he blamed his deranged actions on his parents getting divorced.

14. The Haunting in Connecticut

This movie follows a family with a mentally ill son. They move to a new home to give their son a new start. Later, they learn that the house was previously a mortuary. The ghosts return to haunt the owners, and it based on a real family who experienced disturbing occurrences after moving into a former mortuary.

15. The Zodiac Killer

This serial killer was infamous during the 1960s and 1970s. He killed numerous people and had the audacity to brag to the press about it. He was proud of his crimes and wanted attention. This movie makes his murders even more terrifying, especially when you consider the fact that he got away with it.

4. Tower of Druaga: The Aegis of Uruk

This story is similar to Sword Art Online. Like Sword Art Online, it has a tower setting where the characters have the ascend through each floor. Like Sword Art Online, players have to keep moving through the floors until they reach the top floor and defeat the final boss. This game has a number of RPG elements like leveling up, searching for rare items and forming parties.

In the story, the setting starts in the Third Summer of Anu. This time period is when the powers of the monsters starts to decline, so people take advantage of this change by setting up a camp inside the tower. They work to secure their strongholds as they work toward reaching the top of the tower. Armies from the Uruk Kingdom lead the way, but there are some adventuresome climbers who join in the journey as well. They are drawn to the quest by rumors that the last floor contains the Blue Crystal Rod. One of the latest climbers is Jill. Her goal is to defeat the Evil Lord Druaga and ascend to the top of the tower.

5. No Game No Life

No Game No Life has a fairly ominous title, but it has been a hit since it was released in 2014. This anime is one of the most common games played by people who liked Sword Art Online. This is mostly because they have a similar setting, although this anime lacks the action of Sword Art Online. Instead, it focuses on supernatural, quest-like themes. There are humorous scenes and many fun activities in the game that you can play.

In No Game No Life, we follow the story line of Sora and Shiro. These siblings are known for being reclusive gamers who excel at playing. Sora and Shiro are secretly members of a secretive group of gamers called Blank who are known for never losing their games. On one particular day, they are brought to a world where the games decide everything and all of humanity is driven into just one city. Now, Sora and Shiro are left to defeat the leader and hopefully save humanity from destruction.

6. Mirai Nikki (Future Diary)

If you love psychological thrillers, then you will love playing Mirai Nikki. Initially, it does not seem like this game is like Sword Art Online. There are a few hidden similarities though. Like SAO’s protagonist, the protagonist in Mirai Nikki is generally disliked. He finds himself stuck in a difficult situation and tries to make friends to help him along. Unfortunately, he loses these friends because of the game.

The story line of Mirai Nikki focuses on awkward Yuki Amoano. Unlike other children his age, he likes to spend his time talking to his imaginary friend, Deus Ex Machina, or writing in his journal. On one particular day, he is given proof that Deus Ex Machina is not just an imaginary friend. In his diary, Deus Ex Machina tells him what will happen each day for the next 90 days. When Yuki is asked to take part in a battle against 12 people, he decides to do it. His prophetic diary is on hand to help him find a way to kill each opponent. If he fails at his task, the 90th day will bring the apocalypse.

7. Guilty Crown

The Apocalypse Virus is coming. On December 24, 2029, this biological disaster reaches Japan and creates a disaster known as the Lost Christmas. The situation rapidly reaches unbelievably severe levels. Left scrambling, the Japanese government is forced to call the United Nations and international governments to help combat the epidemic. GHQ is sent from the United Nations to take care of the outbreak, but this creates another problem. Once the outbreak is contained, GHQ retains control over Japan.

The main character in this story is Shu Ouma. He is a high school student who unintentionally gains the power of the Right Hand of the Kings. This rare power makes it possible to remove voids from other people, which are basically a weapon made from the human heart. In the story, he meets a girl from a rebel group called the Undertakers. With this girl, Yuzuriha Inori, Shu wants to make Japan independent of the GHQ overseers. He has the good luck of his Right Hand, but the road ahead is still not clear. With the help of Inori, he must win this conflict and free his country.

8. Kaze no Stigma

In this story, Yagami Kazuma is a part of the Kannagi family. His family is well-respected for being the masters of the Fire technique. Unfortunately, young Yagami is kicked out of his family because a distant relative known as Ayano defeats him in a match that determined who would wield the Blaze Lightning Supremacy. Four years after being cast aside, Kazuma returns as a master of the Wind technique. He is reunited with his younger brother, Ren, as well as Ayano.

The story takes a darker turn when members of Kazuma’s family are killed. People find that the method was the wind technique, so they believe that Kazuma was responsible for the murders. Now, Ayano and Kazuma are working together to prove his innocence.

9. Hack//SIGN

There are many similarities between hack/SIGN and Sword Art Online, so some people believe that SAO was actually based on this other series. While hack/SIGN does not have a lot of action, it is still fun to play. In the game, you uncover secrets until the main character ultimately figures out the reason why he cannot log out of the game.

Tsukasa wakes up inside a game known as the World. Unfortunately, he cannot remember how he got there, and he finds that he cannot log out. He ends up finding a guardian item that protects him from harm and tries to uncover the reason why he cannot log out. To help him along the way, Subaru of the Crimson Knights joins forces with him.

10. Log Horizon

This anime is quite similar to SAO and has a similar setting. Like SAO, players have to fight in the game in order to get back to their normal lives. The story features around the Elder Tale game that has an 11th expansion pack. About 30,000 players are in their avatars when they suddenly find that the expansion pack has started. They are inside their favorite game and must play to get out. Shiroe is the main character who leads the others in the game.

For weeks after I watched Inception, I kept remembering the last scene. Did he die? Did he actually get back on the plane? I spent forever to find something online that would tell me what the ending actually meant, but I came up with nothing. For the most part, it seems like the end of Inception was supposed to leave it up to the viewer to decide the outcome.

During the film, you go through multiple dream states and reality is constantly up for debate. After watching the film, you may be finding yourself questioning how real your own reality is and what your dreams really mean. Inception was an amazing film, and it is too bad that there aren’t more films like it. Luckily, we do have a list of 10 movies like Inception. While they are not exactly the same, they will leave you with many of the same mind-bending scenes and intricate story lines.

1. Sleep Dealer

The first on our list is the Sleep Dealer. This is a movie where globalization and immigration have become major issues. Set in the future, it involves time traveling and has a few holes in the plot. There is basically no way to involve time traveling in a movie without a few plot holes, so this problem is to be expected.

Other than the plot holes, this movie is perfect. The government in the movie uses the confusion of citizens and their divisions to control them. It includes excellent acting and fairly well-developed characters. While it was made on a low budget, the Sleep Dealer ended up becoming a fairly good sci-fi movie and is definitely worth watching.

2. Shutter Island

This movie makes the list for a few reasons. First off, it is another movie that has Leonardo DiCaprio as the star, so that certainly makes it worth watching. Like Inception, it leaves you questioning reality and wondering if the world that you see is even real. It is by far one of the best psychological thrillers of the last ten years.

The story starts with an investigator sent to a mental institution on Shutter Island to investigate a missing prisoner. He finds staff members who are unwilling to work with him to solve the case, and he begins to think that something suspicious is going on. Stuck on the island, he is without backup and must find a way to solve the case on his own. We can’t go into too much more without revealing the dramatic ending, but we will say that there are many common threads that make it similar to Inception and certainly a good way to spend your Friday night movie night.

3. The Matrix

The Matrix may be an older movie on this list, but it is one of the best movies like Inception that there is. Interestingly, some of the main concepts behind the Matrix are actually from a section of Plato’s Republic where he discusses the Allegory of the Cave. While it obviously has a more modern take, it does an excellent job illustrating this philosophical concept.

(Spoiler Alert) The film starts in 1999 and revolves around a computer hacker named Neo. During the day, he has a normal job and seems like a normal guy. At night, he is a hacker. He ends up meeting a group of people who tell him that they know the real truth about the world. Like most people, Neo dismisses this idea at first and refuses to believe them. After meeting them again, he starts to think that there could be something to their story.

Ultimately, Neo meets Morpheus who tells him that he can choose between two pills. The blue pill means that he will go back to normal life and forget that they ever had a conversation. If he takes the red pill, he will start to learn the truth about the world. Neo takes the red pill and immediately starts to see the truth in the world. Our entire world is just a giant simulation created by machines. Billions of other people are still asleep and unaware of the nature of this reality. Ultimately, the movie centers around whether human kind will be victorious over the machines.

4. The Butterfly Effect

You have probably heard the quote before about a butterfly flapping its wings in one place and causing a tsunami somewhere else. The world and everything that happens in it is intricately connected. The Butterfly Effect focuses on this concept by posing the question: If you could return to a major moment in your life and make a better choice, what would happen? How would the world be different if you could go back and change a moment of it?

You will probably never get to find out the real answer to that question, but the Butterfly Effect follows the story of someone who does. In the story, Evan is a 20-year-old student in college. He manages to find a way to go back through the moments of his life and changes things. At the heart of this tale is the question of whether changing things will actually make things better. At some point, you must be willing to just accept reality the way it is and move on in life. There are some things that you couldn’t—and shouldn’t—control.

5. The Thirteenth Floor

This movie is set in Los Angeles during the 1990s. Like many sci-fi films, it focuses on a simulated world. In the Thirteenth Floor, the simulation was created by a brilliant programmer in 1937. Once he has created the program, he is killed and his programming secrets die along with them. The only thing left behind is one message that could potentially determine the fate of the world.

In the film, Douglas Hall was the best friend of the programmer and is suspected of murdering him. After a while, he even starts to question if he was the one who murdered his friend. More importantly, what was the message that his friend was trying to impart? (Spoiler alert) Suddenly, the entire situation becomes clearer. He realizes that it is actually 2024. He thought that he was living in the 1990s, but it turns out that he was in a simulation in a simulation. He and his friend had thought that they were pulling the strings, but someone else is running the show. Now, Hall has to find out who the real murderer was and figure out why they killed his friend. The simulation-within-a-simulation aspect of this movie is one of the reasons why this movie is so similar to Inception.

6. The Machinist

This movie is an impressive showcase of the work that actors go through for their craft. Christian Bale went from his muscle-bound Batman days to an anorexic-like figure for the Machinest. In the movie, he struggles to deal with how he perceives reality. The character has severe insomnia, which causes quirks and strange behaviors. Before long, these behaviors push away the people close to him. Like Inception, you are left wondering what part of the movie is real and which parts are not.

7. The Others

In the Others, one mother is trying to keep her children safe from the world while waiting for her husband to return home from World War II. New servants arrive, and they start to notice strange things happening. It almost seems like the mansion is haunted. While this has more of a horror element than Inception, the twists, turns and ending make it worth watching.

8. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

In this movie, one couple goes over-board in forgetting about a break up by deleting the memories they have of their life together. Before long, they start to realize how awful this plan is working out and want to find a way to end the process before it becomes too late.

9. Source Code

This movie jumps into the story line immediately. It follows the story of Colter Stevens. Stevens is a pilot in the United States military who wakes up on a train in Chicago, but realizes that he is in someone else’s body. His last memory was crashing his plane in Afghanistan, so it does not make any sense that he would be here. As he tries to figure out what is going on, a bomb explodes and he finds himself in a cockpit again. Now, he is left struggling to decide which is real. His life before, his life now, both or neither?

10. Memento

In this movie, Leonard is the main character and has one goal in life. All he wants to do is find out who was responsible for the rape and murder of his wife and seek vengeance. Unfortunately, he suffers from short-term memory loss, so it is nearly impossible to keep track of his clues. When he finds an important clue, he tattoos it on his body so that he will remember it. Like many movies in this genre, a sudden twist leaves you shocked after a movie spent guessing what is going on.

When it comes to anime, one popular category is romance anime. These tales are all about finding love and romance. Whether you just love romance or want a mix of drama in your love stories, these romance anime are some of the best that you will find.

1. Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun

This is by far one of the best romance animes on this list. Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun is quite new, so many people are not familiar with it yet. While it is a new show, it has some of the best story lines and romance in all of anime. The cute love stories leave you wanting more, and many of the relationships are surprisingly wholesome and caring.

The entire plot line centers around Shizuku Mizutani is a high-achiever student and your typical over-achiever. She happens to be fairly cold in person, but don’t let this fool you. One day, Shuzuku told by a teacher to deliver handouts to another student known as Yoshida Haru. This student is basically the diametric opposite of Mizutani. Haru is an underachiever who was recently suspended from school. Surprisingly, Haru is touched when Shizuku delivers the handouts. While he expresses that he is touched, she seems completely cold and withdrawn. Her icy demeanor eventually earns her the nickname of Dry Ice.

At first, Haru is completely innocent about all of the social situations going on. In one way, the pair are quite similar because they are both clueless about what other people go through. Before long, Haru realizes that he feels something for Shuzuku, so he starts to follow her. Through a string of complications and missteps, they begin to develop a heart-warming, romantic relationship.

2. Lovely Complex

This anime is almost too cute to be believed. If you prefer a little less drama and a little more comedy, then this sweet, romantic story is perfect for you. In the tale, you have the classic story of a mismatched pair. Riza Koizumi is an unusually tall teenage girl, while Atsushi Otani is unusually short. In addition, they also have personalities that are opposed to each other. Because of this, they often bicker with one another. At the same time, there are a number of similarities that end up drawing the two together.

3. Sakurasou no Pet no Kanojo

Also known as the Pet Girl of Sakurasou, this anime is all about love. In some ways, it is just another harem anime, but it also has an extremely complex story line. Instead of just focusing on the act of falling in love, it deals with relationships and romance in general. The characters are surprisingly well developed, which may be the reason why the show also has an excellent plot line. Even if you are not normally into romance anime, this story line will draw you in and make you want to watch the next episode.

The story line follows the tale of Handa Sorata. He is a kind-hearted soul, and he can’t stand to let a cat be abandoned or homeless. Because of this, he ends up bringing each stray animal home with him. He lives in a place known as Sakurasou, which is an eclectic area populated by the eccentric and their weird habits. Since most of the students there have their own eccentricities, Sorata basically goes unnoticed. Before long, one of the oddest, most intelligent girls in the story moves to Sakurasou and meets Sorata. Sorata is given the task of caring for her, and the romance unfolds from there.

4. Special A

Romances are great, but plot lines are equally important. Special A manages to have both, which is one of the biggest reasons it made this list. It is also perfect if you cannot decide if you like romance, comedy or drama better because the show includes all of these aspects. In the story, the scriptwriters take things a step farther then normal by creating multiple plot lines. Instead of following a single pair falling in love, you will see multiple love stories and plot lines evolve over time. There is still a main couple in the story, and this couple tends to fight each other to gain control before they ultimately realize that they have developed feelings for each other. Unlike some romances, Special A also manages to have a fast-paced, engaging plot line.

The story centers around Kei Takashima and Hikari Hanazono. They have been friends as well as rivals since they were little children. Their entire relationship is based on competing against each other, although Kei always comes out in top. Now that they have reached high school, they are in a battle to make it to Special Class A, which is where only the best and brightest go. Hikari is certain that she will take this spot from Kei, but the battle against Hikari ends up awakening feelings that she never expected or realized that she had.

5. Ao Haru Ride

This is another one of the newer anime that managed to make this list. It has a modern story line and a great romance. Plus, the artistic elements of the show are exceptionally god. The character development is excellent, and the writers have managed to make the romance unfold naturally. Plus, this story ends up having a heart-warming, wholesome element to it that is not always common in modern shows.

The story focuses on Yoshioka Futaba. She is a middle school student who is unfortunately disliked by her fellow students because of her cuteness. With so many people against her, she just wants middle school to be over with so that she can have a fresh start in high school. Yoshioka had always had a crush on Tanaka-kun, but she had never told him how she felt because she was afraid that he would dislike her just as much as everyone else.

Now that she finally reached high school, Yoshioka gave herself a complete makeover and has a less lady-like demeanor. She is determined not to make the same mistakes she made in middle school. She re-meets Tanaka-kun, who is now called Mabuchi Kou. He confesses that he liked her as well. So much has changed since middle school however, so you will have to watch the show to find out if their feelings are still the same.

6. Golden Time

This is an excellent show to watch if you want the best romance animes. It is surprisingly realistic and seems like something that could actually happen in real life. While it has the normal affection, flirting and romantic behavior you would expect in a romance anime, it also has a realistic story line that covers the complications of romance wand real life.

In the story, Tada Banri is starting law school and is just heading to his first day at school. Along the way, he meets up with a fellow guy called Mitsuo Yanagisawa who is also headed to school. Before they can get too friendly, a bouquet of flowers is smashed into Yanagisawa’s face as Kaga Kouko barrels onto the scene. It turns out that Kaga was a childhood friend of Mitsuo, and she had an abnormal obsession with him. In an attempt to get away from her obsession, Mitsuo had moved and started school. Kaga followed him, and Tada is now drawn into the odd situation.

7. Toradora

This romantic comedy is perfect for everyone because it has excellent character development and a great story line. While it borders on cliche at times, it is well worth the time spent watching it. Before long, you will find yourself completely engrossed in the story.

In the story, Takasu Ryuuji is a juvenile delinquent who tends to intimidate the people around him. Meanwhile, Aisaka Taiga is perceived as a delicate, gentle girl, but she can be strong and fierce when the situation calls for it. Initially, the pair actually like each other’s best friends. When Taiga makes a mistake about Ryuuji and her her crush’s bags, she is afraid that her feelings will be revealed. She intends to stop him from spreading the secret, but realizes that he likes her friend. Instead of fighting it out, they form a pact to help each other get their crush.

8. Clannad

This story is one of the best drama out there and has a great plot line. While it may not have a single kissing scene, it really brings the love and drama to life.

In the story, Okazaki Tomoya notices Nagisa Furukawa walking to school. They become friends and develop a friendly attachment, but their friendship begins to transform over time. Before long, you are following a roller coaster of twists, turns and heart-wrenching emotion as you watch these characters grow closer.

9. Kimi ni Todoke

This unique story might not be the most popular on this list, but it deserve more attention than it gets. It has all the great building blocks of a love story. The production team did a great job bringing the tale to life.

Kuronuma Sawako has developed the nickname of Sadako for being creepy, but she is actually just misunderstood because of her awkwardness. Meanwhile, Kazehaya Shouta is the popular guy from high school that everyone loves. Kazehaya talks to anyone and everyone, so it is unsurprising that he ends up talking to Kuronuma. She feels grateful that he even bothered to talk to her, and she is hopeful that this will lead to a friendship or something more.

10. Kaichou wa Maid-sama

This is another one of the best romance animes that you can watch. It has extremely believable characters who have been well-developed to match the equally interesting plot line. In the story, the characters seem like someone you would like to be friends with. They are likable, and all of their problems seem like things that you or someone you know may have experienced at some point. This is also a great anime to watch if your prefer comedies that have cute quirks and laughs along the way. The story line is fairly straightforward, so it is not the best option if you like more complex plots.

The story starts at an all-boys school that is becoming co-ed. At first, the girls who are brought to the school feel unwelcomed and awkward. Ayuzawa Misaki ends up becoming the student council president because she wants to keep the school’s balance in place, but she is greatly disliked by the boys who do not want her ruling over them. Since she wants to seem liked the iron-fisted president, Ayuzawa has to keep her after-school job a secret since she works as a maid in a cafe. Usui Takumi walks into the cafe and discovers her secret. From there, the rest of the love story starts to unfold.

If you love Game of Thrones, you are not alone. This television show has been a major hit because of its dark story lines, engaging plot and vivid characters. I originally fell in love with the series because of the books. They were the types of novels that you stayed awake until 4 AM just to finish reading. While most movies that are based on books end up being terrible, Game of Thrones was entirely different.

Part of it was the way they designed the show. There are far too many plot twists and plot lines involved for a movie. If they had made a movie instead of a television show, it would have been impossible to do the books justice. Instead, they were smart enough to turn it into television shows so that you could actually see the stories come to life. If you are into heart-wrenching plots, sudden deaths and a surprising amount of nudity, then this television show is great for you.

Interestingly, Game of Thrones holds the record for being the most pirated television show in history. To combat this problem, they started the sixth season out in 172 countries at the same time to prevent pirating. If you just finished binge watching it on Netflix though, you may be looking for your next option. If you need a new television show like Game of Thrones, we have a few ideas in store for you.

1. Sons of Anarchy

This television show stars Charlie Hunnam, which has made it a favorite among many fans. The entire series revolves around a band of motorcycle riders. This gang has a story line taken straight out of Hamlet and follows the tale of Jax Teller. Like the Game of Thrones, it has intense scenes of violence and nudity. Basically, you can imagine what you think about when you consider a motorcycle gang in real life and expect a heightened version of that on the film.

Sons of Anarchy has an impressively developed story line that manages to be dramatic while still keeping a touch of realism. (Spoiler alert) Normally, you would never expect a doctor to fall for a gang leader or a mother to connive a way of putting her daughter in jail. The amazing thing about Sons of Anarchy is not just that these story lines happen, but that you believe that they could happen. Best of all, you can stream all of Sons of Anarchy on Netflix, which is perfect for any binge watchers out there.

2. Vikings

If you look in any history book, you will see why the actual, real life Vikings are so similar to the Game of Thrones. The television show is just as good. It starts with the story of Ragnar Lothbrok. At the star of the tale, Ragnar is just a farmer, but he ends up becoming the king of Denmark. Over the story line, he terrorizes countries like England and France through his raiding. To help him out on this goal, he has a shipbuilder (Floki), a brother (Rollo) and his first wife (Lagertha).

I love this show because it is the perfect example of the anti-hero in literature. Normally, an anti-hero is someone that is the protagonist, but you hate them. You don’t want to like them, but you find yourself rooting for them anyway. When you watch Vikings, you quickly find yourself rooting for the bad guy from the last season and hating the good guys from before. The scriptwriters did an amazing job of making story lines that make these sudden changes seem believable—you often don’t realize that your views are even changing. Plus, Vikings is a great show for anyone who loves Scandinavian history in the middle ages.

3. The Tudors

While Game of Thrones is known (and sometimes hated) for its nudity and violence, the Tudors is generally not. These two television shows still have some things in common though. With the Tudors, you get a jam-packed plot with a fight for power and inside politics. While the historical features of the show are decidedly not accurate at times, it really doesn’t matter. The amazing drama and power plays in the Tudors makes it perfect for anyone who loves Game of Thrones.

4. Rome

Rome makes the list because gritty story line and great actors. Unfortunately, this television show only lasted for two seasons, so you only have 22 episodes to watch before it ends. While it might not have any sword fighting or major violence like Game of Thrones, it is definitely worth watching.

5. House of Cards

When it comes to political intrigue, few shows can beat House of Cards. This television show follows the back-stabbing power plays that it takes to reach the top. In the show, Kevin Spacey and Kate Mara play the main characters. Spacey’s character starts out as a politician with his sights set on the power of the presidency. We won’t go into what happens (it really is too good of a show to spoil), but the political drama is amazing.

Interestingly, House of Cards is one of the few American shows that is played in Iran. Apparently, the Iranian government wanted to use it to show what American democracy is really like. If you have watched the show for any amount of time at all, you will hope that the Iranians are wrong. This show has such dark twists and turns that you leave hoping that the government is only half as bad as it appears. If anything in the show were true, the Iranians may be right to worry about our democracy.

Worries aside, House of Cards really is a great show to watch. Since it was produced on Netflix, you can watch all of the episodes without any interruptions. This modern-day story has the same political intrigues and drama of Game of Thrones, so it is a great thing to add to your list of favorite shows.

6. Boardwalk Empire

During Prohibition, bootleggers illegally made, smuggled and sold alcohol. Boardwalk Empire centers around this time period filled with corruption, danger and violence. It follows the tale of Nicky Thompson, who happens to be a mobster and a politician. When the story starts out, his high-rolling lifestyle has brought the feds in to investigate his lifestyle and look for corruption. The series has excellent cinematography, amazing story lines and great actors.

7. Spartacus

If you love history, then you will love Spartacus. This television show is packed full of violence and drama. The intense action drives the plot line and includes gladiators. Plus, the story line includes many back-stabbing betrayals like the Game of Thrones. If you needed something to fill your weekend, you can watch the entire show on Netflix from the comfort of your home.

8. Black Sails

If you like Game of Thrones because of the violence and nudity, then Black Sails is the right choice for you. This is basically set up as a prequel to Treasure Island. It follows the tales of the infamous, violent pirate, Captain Flint. At the start of the story, Flint lives on an island that is home to the worst of society. Pirates, thieves and prostitutes make up the population of the island, and Captain Flint has to fight to remain on top. People tend to like the second and third season more than the first, so make sure to give this television show a fair shot before you check out something else.

9. The Bastard Executioner

There is one downside to the Bastard Executioner. Like many good shows, it only aired for a season before it was canceled. The good news is that the one season will be well worth the time spent watching it. The story line is set in about the year 1300 in Wales. It follows the tale of Wlikn Brattle. Brattle had just arrived home from war and was looking to live the rest of his life as peacefully as possible. Before long, he ends up becoming the executioner. You will get all of the gore, drama, violence and blood that you are used to with Game of Thrones.

10. The Last Kingdom

Last on our list is the Last Kingdom. The Last Kingdom was actually based on a book series known as the Saxon Stories. These stories were based in England during the 900s when the Viking raids were reaching a peak. In the story, viewers follow the tale of Uhtred. Uhtred is an orphan who was born in Northumbria, but must ultimately choose between the people he grew up with and the native land that he is actually from.

This is not a good show to watch with children because there is a lot of stabbing, fighting, eye gouging and beheading. If you like battles and raw action, then this is the show for you. It airs on the BBC though, so you may have to do a bit of searching before you can find a place to stream it online.

If you grew up with movies, chances are you watched some Disney movies. Even as an adult chances are you’ll be watching Disney movies, because let’s face it: there’s something about a good old fairy tale (and even their live action movies tend to have a fairy tale like quality) with a moral message. It makes you feel good.

That’s why I’ve listed the top fifty (according to IMDb) Disney movies of the 21st century. Just in case you are looking for a movie for the next family night, or simply the next time it’s you, a DVD and a pint of ice cream!

(Oh, and remember that Disney merged with Pixar in 2006, so Pixar movies from that day onwards have been listed as Disney movies too. Lucky for you – Pixar is a good studio!)

1. WALL-E

In short it’s a wonderful dystopian tale of what it actually means to be human, even if the main character is a robot. Stunning visuals too.

The longer version is that WALL-E is a robot living on an abandoned Earth with a pet cockroach and the last surviving plant. When another robot, EVE, is sent to look for life on Earth, WALL-E falls in love with her and gives her the plant, which makes her go into sleep mode, as she’s found life. When a spaceship comes to pick her up, WALL-E follows and rather than help the crew kill the last living plant from Earth WALL-E and friends step in to save the day.

As the highest IMDb rated Disney movie of the 21st Century you might just want to do yourself a favor and watch it! (And for the record, anything on IMDb rated above 8 is counted as extraordinarily good – it’s extremely hard to get that kind of score!)

IMDb Score: 8,4

2. Up

A grumpy old man turns out not to be all that grumpy when he meets a lonely young boy… It’s not a new concept, but Disney made it look bright and shiny in this story. So much so it felt almost new. Because the story is new – Carl Fredricksen is a grumpy old man who refuses to move out of his home when the construction workers want to build across his lawn. He accidentally hits someone when trying to remove his mailbox though and is sentenced to a retirement home. Instead of obeying orders he uses balloons to fly himself and his newfound scout friend, Russel, to Paradise Falls where he once promised to build a house with his diseased wife.

IMDb Score: 8,3

3. Toy Story 3

Usually franchises decrease in popularity one movie after the next, but Toy Story managed to do the opposite – the last film in the franchise got the highest ratings.

Toy owner Andy is now 17 and ready to head off to college, whilst the toys are accidentally being donated to a daycare centre. At first all is well with the world and the toys enjoy being played with again, but once they discover that the deceptively welcoming Lotso bear is actually a tyrant they need to come up with a plan and escape to return home to Andy.

IMDb Score: 8,3

4. Inside Out

This movie appears to have turned people’s minds one way or another – some give it one star, others give it ten stars. Enough people have given it a high enough rating to make it one of the most popular Disney movies of the 21st Century though, which is enough to peak anyone’s curiosity!

The story is about Riley, a Midwestern girl who is uprooted when her dad takes a job in San Francisco. Riley is guided by her emotions – Joy, Fear, Anger, Disgust and Sadness – which live in headquarters inside her brain. When she moves cities the emotions end up in turmoil and she struggles to let Joy guide her way, as opposed to letting Fear, Anger, Disgust and Sadness be her compasses.

IMDb Score: 8,2

5. Zootopia

If you haven’t seen this movie about a bunny, Judy Hopps, who sets off to the big city (Zootopia) to become a police officer (a profession “not meant for bunnies”), you’ve missed out! Seriously. Maybe I’m a bit biased as the movie reminded me of my own life as a country girl leaving home for the big city, but the nine year old twins I help raise loved it too. Possibly because of the dazzling adventure where Judy has to solve a crime with the help of a fox who, just in line with the stereotype willy fox, is a con artist.

In a world where cities are divided into districts with different “kinds” of people, a movie looking at a city divided into neighborhoods with different kinds of animals and with a bunny in the lead trying to break down the “stereotypes” it feels like an extremely relevant movie. And it’s funny. And clever. And it has a soundtrack with Shakira.

IMDb Score: 8,1

6. Monsters Inc.

Your kid thinks there’s a monster in their closet. No matter what you say, once the lights are off, there’s a monster in the closet. Seriously. And how can you refute it? Because as soon as you turn off the lights and close the closet you can’t prove it. Instead let your kids (or your inner kid) watch Monsters Inc. and see that monsters are actually quite real. Feelings and all. And they aren’t that scary. In fact, they’re quite cute…and as it turns out, petrified of children, but all that’s about to change!

If you’ve fought some monsters of your own recently, this is a good movie to make you face your fears too. And look beyond them.

IMDb Score: 8,1

7. Ratatouille

A rat wants to become a chef in a world where rats eat whatever they can get their paws on and are seen as a curse in the kitchen. An interesting concept. And while the storyline about finding acceptance for who you are (whilst simultaneously coming to turns with it yourself) isn’t exactly new, it’s ever relevant. Big plus points for the great French kitchen environment too.

IMDb Score: 8

8. Pirates of the Caribbean; The Curse of the Black Pearl

If you love pirates and big adventures on stormy seas, filled with just the right amount of love and laughter too, this is a movie for you.

Will Turner is a nice kind of guy who is forced to become the ally of pirate Jack Sparrow when the love of his life, Elizabeth, is kidnapped by Captain Barbossa. Together they set out on a swashbuckling adventure. I, for one, couldn’t resist the charm of this movie. Oh and it’s got Johnny Depp and Orlando Bloom in it and with that, I rest my case.

IMDb Score: 8

9. Big Hero 6

Robotics prodigy Hiro lives in the city of San Fransokyo where he makes money doing not so cool stuff. His brother, Tadashi, gets him back on the straight and narrow, only to end up killed in a terrible and evil plot. To save the day Hiro transform his band of friends into high tech heroes and fights the bad guys.

IMDb Score: 7,9

10. Tangled

Tangled is a modern take on the old story of Rapunzel – a girl whose parents strike a deal with a witch to get a magical/medicinal flower from her garden in return for handing the baby over after she’s born.

In Tangled Rapunzel is kidnapped by the witch and locked away in her tower, so that the witch can harvest the power of the flower that Rapunzel was fed; a power to keep the witch young.

One day a thief climbs into the tower where Rapunzel is kept and she takes him prisoner. In return for releasing him she wants him to take her to the place where the floating lights come from that she has seen every year on her birthday.

It’s Rapunzel’s first journey out into the world and a thief’s chance at redemption. Nothing could possibly go wrong, right?!

IMDb Score: 7,8

Maybe a dose of love can help him?

IMDb Score: 7,8

12. Remember the Titans

In suburban Virginia in 1971 one white and one black school were closed and the students and staff sent to another school to integrate. The football teams were merged too and the black coach made head coach. This film shows the year that followed from the eyes of the football team, in a seemingly ever relevant tale of overcoming racial prejudice.

IMDb Score: 7,8

Belle ventures to find her father and takes his place at the castle, where she meets the beast. Of course, she learns to see what lies beyond the surface of his face…

IMDb Score: 7,8

Horrified of what she’s done, Elsa runs off to the mountains and Anna sets off in hot pursuit with the help of a peasant, Kristoff, his Reindeer, Sven, and a talking snowman, Olaf. All of them are about to learn what true love truly means.

IMDb Score: 7,5

15. The Jungle Book

The latest adaptation of The Jungle Book stays true to the original tale of Mowgli – the man-cub who’s been raised by a family of wolves. When the tiger Share Khan sees him, he decides to get rid of him, as he’s been hurt by humans in the past. To survive Mowgli sets out on a journey where he’s guided by the strict panther Bagheera and the happy-go-lucky bear Baloo. Dory can’t remember much, but what she does remember is that she was separated from her parents and she needs to find her way back. Nemo and Marlin decide to help and together they embark on a journey searching for clues to her past, encountering various challenges on the way.

The movie is a very charming take on what it means to suffer from an ailment, do one’s best to overcome it and learn to accept oneself and be loved for who one is.

IMDb Score: 7,4

17. Monsters University

Two very different monsters first become friends, then enemies on campus, only to realize that if they are to get what they want from their course (get good at being scary), they need to team up together and fight for it. It’s an old concept for a story, but it’s ever relevant and ever lovable. Besides, who doesn’t like some monsters in their life?! Cute monsters that is!

IMDb Score: 7,3

18. The Emperor’s New Groove

A vain and self-centered emperor, Kuzco, decides to build a waterpark for himself for his birthday, eliminating a whole village just so as to be able to build it. IMDb Score: 7,3

20. Brave

Angry with her mother’s controlling ways she enlists a witch to help her put a spell on her mother. The spell isn’t what Merida thinks it is though and turns her mother into a beast. A tale about facing the consequences of your actions…with a very fiery young lady in the lead!

IMDb Score: 7,2

21. Lilo & Stich and Treasure Planet

In a place far, far, away a mad scientist is doing an illegal genetic experiment, resulting in Experiment #626 – a fiercely intelligent and strong creature with two flaws: aggression and a sensitivity to water. The scientist is sentenced to jail and Experiment #626 is being shipped off to a prison asteroid too…only he escapes and ends up on Hawaii – surrounded by water. There Lilo, a girl from a dysfunctional family which is about to be ripped apart by a social worker, adopts him as a dog and names him Stitch. With love around him, suddenly Stitch starts developing emotionally too. Will he get caught and sent home and will the family be torn apart, or will love conquer all?

An interesting take for a Disney movie – they rarely contain social workers!

IMDb Score: 7,2

22. Winnie the Pooh

Pooh and friends set out on a new adventure after Christopher Robin leaves a note saying he’ll be “back soon.” Owl is certain he’s been captured by a creature named Backsoon and convinces his friends in the Hundred Acre Wood that they must help rescue him. Based on a true story, this movie depicts Penny who, after her father falls ill, decides to take over his Virginia based horse racing stables. Together with veteran trainer Lucien, Penny manages to foster the first Triple Crown winner in 25 years, despite having no real knowledge of horse racing herself.

It’s the kind of true life inspirational tale that Disney has exaggerated just enough to make people turn on their waterworks! Because that’s what Disney does best!

IMDb Score: 7,2

25. Cars

The Famous Lightning McQueen is traveling to California to race, but en route he accidentally damages the road in Radiator Springs. He’s sentenced to repair it himself and is forced to work hard to do so, instead of working hard on being famous. He makes friends with the locals and in the process learns about their values, which help heal his ego. There is, after all, a lot more happiness to be found in friendship than in fame.

IMDb Score: 7,1

26. The Princess and the Frog

This is a modern take on an old tale – that of the Frog Prince. In this version, the hard-working waitress Tiana and arrogant Prince Naveen are turned into frogs and then have to race together through the swamps to break the spell and live their dreams. Of course, they learn many lessons along the way!

IMDb Score: 7,1

27. Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End

The Pirates of the Caribbean franchise has been a real blockbuster journey for Disney; whilst each movie did a little bit less well than the last, they are all still well loved.

This time Will and Elizabeth must rescue Jack Sparrow from the land of the dead, bring together pirate lords from all corners of the world and fight a battle to defeat their enemies once and for all.

IMDb Score: 7,1

28. The Muppets

A man named Tex Richman wants to drill for oil under the Muppet Theatre and three muppet fans set out to gather the Muppets so as to prevent it from happening. Only the muppets are all spread out: “Kermit the Frog now lives in his own mansion depressed in Hollywood, ‘The Great Gonzo’ is a high class plumber at Gonzo’s Royal Flush, Fozzie Bear performs with a tribute band called The Moopets, Miss Piggy is the plus-size fashion editor at Vogue Paris, and Animal is at a celebrity anger management rehab center in Santa Barbara.” (Source: IMDb) Will the three fans succeed in re-uniting the muppets and saving the theatre?

For muppet fans this movie is clearly a must!

IMDb Score: 7,1

29. Maleficient

Maleficient is a fairy in a forest Kingdom – beautiful and pure hearted. She meets a boy from the outside and they fall in love. However, another Kingdom tries to attack them and the boy betrays her in favor of that Kingdom, in which he finally rises to King. Maleficient turns bitter and angry and curses his first born child, only to find herself falling in love with the child and becoming her protector.

It’s a magical tale filled with beautiful CGI – maybe a bit lacking in humor and that extra touch to the story to make it truly shine, but still a movie well worth watching.

IMDb Score: 7

30. Cinderella

It might not be the most entertaining execution of Cinderella but it sure is beautiful! Whoever was head of the art unit is a genius. It’s a stunning movie and the characters are well developed. Perhaps the Prince is a bit lame though? All the same, a very heartwarming tale that, at the very least, gave me some hope for life and goodness after watching it! We all go through years that feels like we’re battling evil step-sisters, but that’s no excuse to give up on the goodness in ourselves.

IMDb Score: 7

He finds his imposter and it turns out it’s the woman – Angelica – whom he once seduced in a convent. She kidnaps Jack as she needs him to help her find the Fountain of Youth to save her father. Of course, there are a few challenges along the way…

(Strange that two Disney movies about the fountain of youth are next to each other in the ratings, don’t you think? Serendipity.)

IMDb Score: 6,7

IMDb Score: 6,5

43. The Lone Ranger

This is the story of John Reid, the Lone Ranger, fighting the notorious Butch Cavendish (possibly the fictional version of a certain Butch Cassidy?) together with the aide of Comache renegade, Tonto.

Now this film is past 40 on our list so it’s not one of the highest scoring movies Disney’s made, but if you like a good Western… And hey, The Lone Ranger was a story conceived for radio back in 1933 and there are books, TV shows and comic strips about the same guy, so there’s definitively more material out there for you to look into! It’s a beloved character.

IMDb Score: 6,5

44. Tommorowland

Imagine a jaded and disillusioned scientific genius who meets a teen filled with scientific curiosity and optimism…and now imagine they embark on an adventure together…that’s Tommorowland for you! IMDb Score: 6,5

45. Alice in Wonderland
