English novelist Jane Austen is responsible for several romantic books that inspire unforgettable characters (Yay for Mr. Darcy & Mr. Knightley!) and modern adaptations. She was never married, much to the intrigue of historians. The movie focuses on Jane’s alleged affair with Irish lawyer Thomas Lefroy. Though both start on the wrong feet and quarrel at their first few meetings, both Jane and Tom find themselves attracted to each other. He is a feisty, mischievous young man and she is an ambitious, intelligent woman. Their union is impossible however because Jane is from a poor family and Tom’s uncle is disgraced. They plan on eloping but she discovers that this will incapacitate him from providing for his large family, enabling her sacrifice her very heart.

They spend time reminiscing how they met and how their lives changed ever since and their fears of both the present and the future. They end up in an argument and Celine decides to call it  quits but Jesse professes his unconditional love for her. This is a realistic yet creative take on the ups and downs of love.

In the end, Fanny’s mother relents to the match but the tragedy of life gets in the way.
